The Bradbury Challenge · 1,000 nights

Stuff your head.

One poem, one essay, one short story, every night. Bradbury's advice for writers who want to fill up on images, ideas and styles before they write.

Tonight's trio

…every night then, before you go to bed, you’re stuffing your head with one poem, one short story, one essay—at the end of a thousand nights, Jesus God, you’ll be full of stuff, won’t you?

Why a poem, an essay, and a story?

Poems give you metaphor and rhythm. Essays give you ideas to argue with. Stories show you how other writers build a scene and craft worlds. Within days, your thoughts will shift, your eyes will open, and your ideas will increase in number. After a thousand nights, your head will be so full of stuff that your creativity will know no bounds.

Bradbury's challenge was given in 2 parts: reading and writing. This site takes care of the reading. You write the stories.

“The best hygiene for . . . writers is to write a hell of a lot. If you can, write one short story a week—it doesn’t matter what the quality is to start, but at least you’re practicing… I defy you to write 52 bad ones. Can’t be done.”
